One Law For All

Kiwi Party leader Larry Baldock said name suppression for anyone - famous or not - should be lifted once a person was found guilty.

He cited the recent case of a Manawatu businessman convicted of downloading about 300,000 pornographic images - many of children.

The man was sentenced to four months' home detention but granted permanent name suppression, which Mr Baldock said was "ridiculous".

"It is understandable and reasonable that names may be suppressed when charges are laid as a lot of damage could be done to a person’s reputation if they were wrongly accused.

"Mud sticks", said Mr Baldock, "and those well known to the public could suffer a greater injustice if their names were identified before a conviction. But once convicted I believe it should be one law for all", said the Kiwi Party leader.
